Cheerful Merlot

If you are looking for a soft and accessible wine yet rich in flavour, you will soon end up at with the Merlot. Due to its fruity character of cherries, plums and berries, it is a very tremendously popular wine and the Merlot is therefore one of the most planted grape varieties in the world.

Compared to his brother, Cabernet Sauvignon, the Merlot Grape has a slightly larger size and has a thinner skin. Due to the thin skin, the Merlot contains fewer tannins and that is perfect for a date night without blue teeth ;)

The Merlot owes its beautiful name to the French word Merle, which is French for the bird species "blackbird". It remains a mystery whether this name is because the colour of the grape corresponds to the blackbird or because the blackbird was just as fond of the grape as we humans are. We prefer to think it is the latter!

The Merlot grape is originally a typical Bordeaux grape and is used in world-famous wines like the Pomerol and the Saint Emilion. In addition to expansion to the nearby French region of Languedoc and neighbouring Spain, the Merlot has also found a home in Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
